Wine Tasting in Costa Blanca North
Moscatel bodegas in the Jalón valley, Benissa and Teulada: where to taste, when to go, and the homes for sale between the vineyards.
The Wine Country Behind the Coast
Most people who buy on Costa Blanca North never drive 20 minutes inland. That is a shame, because behind Jávea, Moraira and Calpe there is a small, genuine wine country. The grape here is Moscatel, the Muscat of Alexandria, grown on terraces between almond and olive trees. Farmers once dried it into raisins under the arched porches you still see on old fincas, called riu-raus.
The area falls under the Alicante wine denomination, and the Marina Alta is its Moscatel heartland. You will taste dry, aromatic whites, sweet dessert Moscatels and a few honest reds. Nobody is pretending this is Rioja. That is part of the charm. Wine here is something neighbours buy by the litre on a Saturday, not a museum.
Where to Taste
Jalón (Xaló) is the easy start. The village cooperative sells its wine from big steel tanks, and you can fill your own bottle. Combine it with the Saturday rastro, the long flea market on the riverbed, and a lunch in the square. The Jalón guide has the rest of the day.
Parcent and Jesús Pobre have small family bodegas known for Moscatel, some of it aged into serious sweet wine. Book ahead. These are working cellars, not visitor centres, and the person pouring is often the one who made it.
L'Alfàs del Pi, behind Albir, is home to Bodegas Enrique Mendoza, the best-known estate on this stretch, with guided visits and barrel tastings in English. It is the polished option if you are hosting visitors.
Benissa and Teulada keep the Moscatel tradition closer to the coast, with terraced vineyards that run down towards Moraira. Ask in the village wine shops which local labels are worth a bottle.
Go in late summer or winter
Moscatel is picked from late August into September. In January and February the almond blossom turns the Jalón valley white, and the cellars are quiet.
Book small bodegas ahead
Family cellars rarely have fixed opening hours. Call or message the day before, especially at weekends.
Plan the driver
The roads are narrow and the villages are spread out. Agree a driver, or base the day in one village and walk.
Buy to take home
Cellar-door prices are often far below restaurant prices. A box of Moscatel is the classic thing to bring friends visiting from home.
Living Among the Vines
A tasting day often ends the same way for our buyers. You sit on a terrace in Alcalalí, look across the vines at the Bernia ridge and ask what a house here costs. The honest answer is: less than on the coast, but not cheap, and there is not much to choose from.
On 9 October 2026 the live feed had 10 villas in Jalón, Alcalalí and Llíber, from €530,000 with a median around €645,000. Every one had a pool, and most are recently built. You get space, quiet and a view. You give up walking to the beach, and in winter you will drive for most errands. The coast at Jávea or Moraira is 20 to 25 minutes away. Jalón valley villas
Pedreguer and Gata de Gorgos sit where the valley opens towards Dénia and Jávea. It is still Moscatel country, with village life, a weekly market and shops in walking distance of the centre. On the feed there were 11 homes from €363,000, most of them 3-bed villas.

Benissa and Teulada
If you want the wine and the sea, look at Benissa and Teulada. Both are old Moscatel towns with terraced vineyards, and both run down to the coast between Calpe and Moraira. The trade-off is price. Benissa had 34 villas on the feed with a median above €2 million, many of them large sea-view homes on the coast road.

Taste First, Then View
Use a tasting day as a scouting trip. Drive the valley road, stop in two villages and notice which one still feels right at five in the afternoon.
